Team connection for hybrid and distributed teams

Hybrid work has made casual connection harder to come by. Practical ways to rebuild belonging across offices, branches and remote colleagues without forced fun.

Gallup's recent workplace research found that around one in five employees globally report feeling lonely a lot of the previous day, with fully remote workers reporting it more often. Hybrid work solved real problems, from long commutes to load-shedding disruptions, but it also removed many of the small, unplanned moments where colleagues used to get to know each other.

The usual response is an annual team-building day. A venue outside the city, a facilitator, some activities. These can be genuinely enjoyable. But one day a year cannot replace the everyday connection that hybrid teams have lost.

Connection is built in small, repeated moments

Belonging grows through repeated, low-pressure interaction around something shared. That is why team-based play inside a season works so well. When a team spends ten weeks working together on short challenges, trivia and creative tasks, people who rarely talk start to have a reason to.

Avoiding forced fun

  • Keep activities optional and short.
  • Mix digital games with offline options for those who prefer them.
  • Form teams across departments and locations deliberately.
  • Let people contribute in different ways, not only by performing.
  • Respect working hours and time zones.

Stories as a connection tool

Some of the most effective connection formats are surprisingly simple. Prompts like 'teach us your trick' or 'a day in my shoes' let colleagues share how they work and what they care about. With consent and light moderation, these stories help a branch in Gqeberha and a head office in Sandton feel like the same company. See how this fits into the wider experiences model.

You cannot schedule belonging. You can create the conditions for it.

Bring it together in person

In-person time is most valuable when it has a purpose. A finale event that celebrates the whole season, where teams finally meet the people they have been playing alongside, is far more memorable than a standalone function.
